My Advice Before Starting Your Cairo Tour
Arriving in Cairo the afternoon or evening before a tour like this works best. When clients tell me they “want to hit the ground running” I always ask them to rethink because if the international travel has been more draining than they expect – then their Cairo trip will get off to a bad start and it may be difficult to recover momentum.

Day 1: Giza Plateau & Grand Egyptian Museum
Morning: Giza Plateau – Pick up time 8am at your hotel
We begin at the Sphinx and Valley Temple before exploring the Giza Plateau from different viewpoints. The aim is not simply to stand in front of the pyramids for a photograph, but to understand the landscape, the engineering and the purpose behind this extraordinary site.

Day 2 – Saqqara & the Egyptian Museum
After breakfast, your personal Egyptologist guide will meet you at your hotel and you will drive directly to Saqqara, one of the most important archaeological sites in Egypt and the true beginning of pyramid building.
Unlike Giza, where the scale of the pyramids dominates the landscape, Saqqara allows you to see how ancient Egyptian ideas about kingship, burial and the afterlife developed over thousands of years.
Your visit includes:
- Saqqara Complex – including the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the world’s earliest large-scale stone monument
- Serapeum – the underground galleries said to be associated with the burial of the sacred Apis bulls. The history and interpretation of this site are more fascinating than many visitors realise.
- Imhotep Museum – dedicated to the architect of the Step Pyramid and one of ancient Egypt’s most remarkable figures
- Tombs of Kagemni and Ti – beautifully decorated private tombs offering a glimpse into everyday life in ancient Egypt
- Teti Pyramid – including access to the pyramid interior and its Pyramid Texts
After lunch, you will continue to the Egyptian Antiquities Museum in Tahrir Square.
While the Grand Egyptian Museum has understandably captured worldwide attention, I still include the Egyptian Museum on many Cairo itineraries because it offers something completely different. This historic museum, opened in 1902, holds the atmosphere of early Egyptology and houses an extraordinary collection of objects that helped shape our understanding of ancient Egypt.
One of my favourite recent additions is the exhibit of Psusennes I, often called “The Silver King”. In his time, silver was considered more valuable than gold, and his treasures are a reminder that ancient Egypt was far more complex than the stories we often hear.
The museum is not simply about seeing famous artefacts – it is about understanding how they were discovered, studied and displayed over more than a century. We need to recognize that while modern museums like the GEM are wonderful, they don’t hold the charm of the older model or the history of who walked their galleries. The museum at Tahrir is a treasure itself.
At the end of the afternoon, you will be driven back to your hotel.

I don’t believe the best way to see Cairo is simply to tick off the famous sites and move on.
