Will You Still Be Able to Find Accommodation in Luxor for the 2027 Solar Eclipse?

If you are planning to come to Egypt for the 2 August 2027 Total Solar Eclipse, and particularly if you want to experience it in Luxor, there is something you need to understand now: do not assume you will be able to find accommodation when you get here.

Luxor is going to be one of the most sought-after places on Earth on eclipse day.  The eclipse passes almost directly over Luxor, with around six minutes of totality, making it the headline destination for eclipse travelers.

As we get closer, I am watching something happen that I have been warning about for some time: accommodation is becoming scarce, prices are rising, and people who have already booked their way to Luxor are discovering that they have not actually solved the accommodation problem.

What is happening to accommodation prices in Luxor?

Hotels and other accommodation providers are responding to the exceptional demand for the 2027 eclipse.  There are already dedicated eclipse accommodation packages being sold in Luxor, with some properties requiring fixed multi-night stays and full payment because of the demand.

I am also seeing private accommodation being offered by families in Luxor for the eclipse period at prices starting around $2,000 per couple per night.  There is nothing inherently wrong with staying in someone’s home, but you need to understand the difference between booking a properly established hotel or tour operator and making an informal arrangement through social media.

If the price changes, the person offering the accommodation can change their mind.  If they cancel your booking, there may be very little you can do about it.  I am already seeing people on social media talking about existing accommodation arrangements being cancelled or repriced as demand increases.  I am also seeing extraordinarily high asking prices, including offers running into tens of thousands of euros per person per night.

The important point isn’t whether every one of those prices will eventually be paid.  The market is moving very quickly, and waiting to see what happens is becoming an increasingly expensive gamble.

What if my cruise or tour ends in Luxor after the eclipse?

This is another problem I am seeing develop.  People have booked Nile cruises and Egypt tours which bring them into Luxor on 2 or 3 August 2027, assuming that because they have booked their cruise or tour, their accommodation problem is solved.

It isn’t necessarily.

  • If your cruise ends in Luxor on 2 August, you still need somewhere to sleep that night.
  • If your tour finishes on 3 August, you still need somewhere to sleep if you are not flying out immediately.
  • Some travellers are now discovering that accommodation in Luxor for those nights is extremely difficult to find, and
  • Some are considering cancelling their original arrangements because they cannot affordably solve the accommodation problem.

Before you book any eclipse cruise or tour, look carefully at exactly where you will sleep on the nights before and after the eclipse.  Don’t assume the operator can find a hotel for you.

Can I just arrive in Luxor and find somewhere?

I really wouldn’t.  I am seeing people on social media talking about arriving in Cairo or Luxor without accommodation and finding somewhere when they get there.  Others are talking about camping “in the desert”.

Please stop and think about that for a moment.  This is Luxor in August.  The eclipse happens in the early afternoon, you will be dealing with extreme summer heat, and a very large number of people will be trying to do exactly the same thing.

Camping somewhere because you couldn’t find a hotel will not be allowed by the tourism police, is not the adventurous solution it might sound like when you are sitting at home planning your trip.

Arriving in Luxor like a travelling nomad in August 2027 is not a healthy or sensible plan.

What about flights to Luxor?

Accommodation isn’t the only problem.  There is also a developing issue with flights.  Scheduled domestic flights between Cairo and Luxor, and Cairo and Aswan, have limited capacity.  As demand increases, available seats are becoming increasingly difficult and expensive to secure.

I am already seeing prices move dramatically, and I expect the cost of return flights between Cairo and Luxor or Cairo and Aswan to become a significant part of the cost of an eclipse trip.

This is one of the reasons I have taken a different approach for my own 2027 eclipse programmes.  We have chartered private aircraft for our eclipse travelers, so our travelers are not dependent on finding a seat on a scheduled domestic flight at whatever price happens to be available.

Are the booking windows still closed?

I am hearing people say they are waiting because they believe the booking windows for accommodation or flights have not opened yet.

They have.

What is happening now is not simply a question of waiting for bookings to open.  Suppliers are already responding to demand, availability is limited and prices are moving.  Some operators are also holding inventory and adjusting prices as the level of demand becomes clearer.

So if you are waiting because you think the “real” booking period hasn’t started yet, I would rethink that strategy.

What should I do if I want to see the 2027 eclipse in Luxor?

At this point, make sure you have three things properly secured:

  • Accommodation in Luxor for the nights you actually need.
  • A reliable way of getting into Luxor.
  • A reliable way of getting out again after the eclipse.

Look at all three together.  There is no point finding a fantastic eclipse hotel and then discovering you cannot get a flight into Luxor.  Likewise, there is no point booking a Nile cruise that finishes in Luxor on eclipse day if you have nowhere to stay afterwards.

The 2 August 2027 Total Solar Eclipse is not an ordinary high-season travel event.  Luxor is expecting extraordinary demand, and the closer we get, the more difficult it is likely to become to put the whole journey together sensibly.

How can I safely plan my trip to Luxor for the 2027 eclipse?

You don’t have to arrive in Luxor independently and hope everything works out.  We take care of the journey between Cairo and Luxor as part of the programme, and we have chartered private aircraft, removing one of the biggest uncertainties now developing around domestic flight availability.

I have also structured the programmes so that you are not simply buying a room for eclipse day.  The journey is planned around the eclipse itself, with the practical realities of being in Luxor in August taken into account.

The eclipse is the reason you are coming to Egypt.  Getting yourself stranded in Luxor because you didn’t plan the days around it would be a very unfortunate way to experience it.

If you are considering coming to Egypt for the 2027 eclipse, now is the time to look at the complete journey – not just the eclipse viewing itself.
