When is the Best Time to Visit Egypt? (From Someone Who Actually Lives Here)

I get asked this question all the time and I completely understand why.  If you’ve never been to Egypt, the idea of heat, crowds, or even political unrest can be overwhelming.  So let me give you the honest, local answer, based on over two decades of living and working in Luxor.  Let me get the question regarding political unrest out of the way first by referring you to my most recent response to the question “Travel to Egypt 2025 – Is it Safe?”

Regarding the weather – October to April – The “Sweet Spot”

If you’re looking for mild, pleasant weather and long days filled with sightseeing—this is it.  These are the months when the sun is kind, and the temples don’t feel like ovens.  Luxor, Cairo, Aswan—all the major sites are most enjoyable during this window.  But a word of warning: this is also when everyone else wants to come.

If you’re not a fan of crowds or inflated prices, try to avoid Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter weeks—Luxor, in particular, is always crazy busy, regardless of any political or world event, during these times!

March & April – My Personal Favourite

If I had to pick my absolute favourite time, I’d say late March to mid-April.  The air is warm but not stifling.  The light is beautiful.  The crowds are thinning out.  There’s something lovely about that soft shoulder season—still buzzing, but calmer.

May to September – Yes, It’s Hot (But Don’t Rule It Out)

I won’t sugarcoat it: summer in Upper Egypt is hot.  Really hot. But not all heat is equal.  It’s a dry heat here, and if you know how to plan your day around it, it can still be a wonderful time to visit.   For a more in depth answer regarding the summer weather, please check out my article  “Is Egypt too hot in summer?”

I’ve had many guests come in June, July, even August—and love it.  Why?  Because you can have the temples almost to yourself.  Sunrise at Karnak, sunset felucca on the Nile—magic, without the queues.  And let’s be honest, you get more attentive service when we’re not stretched thin.

My tip: get up early, see the sites by noon, and then relax in the shade or take a nap through the afternoon.  That’s how we live here, too.

So… When Is the Best Time?

Truthfully? The best time to visit Egypt is when you feel ready.  If you wait for the “perfect” time, you may never come.  And that would be a shame.  Egypt isn’t just a destination—it’s an experience.  And there’s always something to discover here, no matter the season.

If you’re planning your trip and unsure what’s best for you, feel free to email me.  I’m always happy to offer advice based on your personal priorities, whether it’s avoiding the heat or the crowds—or finding something special that is personal to you.  Whatever the time of year you decide on, bring suitable clothing and invest in some “cooling clothes” – more advice on that in my post “What Should I Wear in Egypt”
