When is the best time to visit Egypt?

(From Someone Who Actually Lives Here)

Short answer:
October to April offers the most comfortable weather for sightseeing, with late March to mid-April being my personal sweet spot.  Summer is hot, yes—but with the right planning, it can be a surprisingly rewarding time to visit.

I get asked this question all the time, and I completely understand why.  If you’ve never been to Egypt, the idea of extreme heat, heavy crowds, or even political instability can feel overwhelming.

So let me give you the honest, local answer—based on over two decades of living and working in Luxor.

Buit before we talk about seasons, let me address the concern that often comes up first.  If safety is what’s holding you back, I’ve covered that in detail in my post, “Travel to Egypt 2025 – Is it Safe?”, which looks at the reality on the ground rather than headlines.

October to April: The Best Weather in Egypt

If you’re looking for mild, pleasant temperatures and full days of sightseeing, this is the most comfortable time of year to visit Egypt.

During these months, the sun is kinder, mornings are fresh, and the temples don’t feel like ovens.  Luxor, Cairo, and Aswan are all at their most enjoyable, especially if you plan to be out early and cover a lot of ground.

The trade-off?  This is also peak season.

Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter weeks are particularly busy—and Luxor, in particular, is always crowded during these periods, regardless of what’s happening politically or globally.  Prices are higher, guides and hotels book out far in advance, and popular sites can feel hectic.

If you’re in the early stages of planning your Egypt trip, this is something else worth factoring in from the start.

March & April: My Personal Favourite

If I had to choose just one window, it would be late March to mid-April.

The air is warm.  The light is beautiful.  The winter crowds begin to thin, but everything is still very much alive and open.  It’s what I’d call a soft shoulder season—still buzzing, but calmer.

For many travelers, this is the perfect balance between comfort and atmosphere.

Visiting Egypt in Summer: May to September

I won’t sugarcoat it—summer in Upper Egypt is hot.  Really hot.

That said, not all heat is equal.  Egypt’s summer heat is dry, and if you plan your days properly, it doesn’t have to be a deal-breaker.  I’ve had many guests visit in June, July, and even August—and genuinely love it.

Why?

Because the temples are quieter.  Sunrise at Karnak without crowds.  A sunset felucca on the Nile with space to breathe.  More attentive service, more flexibility, and a slower rhythm that many people never experience in high season.

The key is planning and there are many things one can do to alleviate heat discomfort outdoors even in the hottest season.  Start early.  Visit sites in the morning.  Be done by midday.  Rest through the afternoon, then enjoy evenings by the river or in the shade. are just a few examples.  It’s how we live here, too.

So… When Is the Best Time to Visit Egypt?

Truthfully? The best time to visit Egypt is when you feel ready.

If you wait for the “perfect” time, you may never come—and that would be a shame.  Egypt isn’t just a destination.  It’s an experience.  And there is always something powerful to discover here, no matter the season.

If you’re unsure what time of year would suit you best—whether your priority is avoiding heat, avoiding crowds, or finding something more personal—feel free to email me. I’m always happy to offer advice based on your specific priorities.

Whatever time of year you choose, pack thoughtfully and invest in good-quality, breathable clothing. I cover that in practical detail in “What Should I Wear in Egypt”, including fabric tips and what actually works on temple days.

Egypt’s climate varies dramatically by season and region. Your comfort depends on your heat tolerance and travel preferences.
